General Questions

Who is your healer? What is his staff experience?

We only work with a highly experienced Shaman Arturo Lopez. His apprenticeship began more than a decade ago in Pisac the Sacred Valley in Peru. Arturo connected with the teachings of Diego Palma and his assistant Jean Pierre. Later, Arturo became Jean Pierre apprentice helping him with many ceremonies. As Jean Pierre pursued his own path sharing Ayahuasca with the world. Arturo felt connected with his work, medicine music and followed his lead.

Our shaman has now been the teacher of many medicine men and women, this allowed him to cultivate a powerful staff who not only are musicians but also hold years of experience working with Ayahuasca. such that they are able to safely and effectively hold space for our guests during ceremony. The beauty of our retreats is the ratio of the staff, most ceremonies have 10-14 participants and 6-7 staff members.

Where does the medicine come from?

The medicine served comes directly from the Peruvian Amazon. It has only Ayahuasca vine and Chacruna leaf. It is prepared by our Shaman’s brother Adler from the Ushnawa tribe. Adler has been cooking the medicine for decades with constant prayer for days. His medicine has traveled the planet. His intention is that each participant experiences the quality and purity of this medicine.

What is the ceremonial space?

We hold ceremonies in a large circular hut called a maloca, which is the traditional ceremonial space used by the Shipibo people for ceremony. The Maloca, rooms and all activities are held in one place so you can relax and fully immersed.

During ceremony, guests have their own yoga mat in a circle around the outer rim of the maloca space, with their own pillows, blankets, and buckets in case the need to purge arises during ceremony. There are bathrooms just outside of the maloca, and walking pathways in case you feel like connecting to nature. The staff is on call to help guests should they need any assistance. The healer, staff and facilitators are across in the center of the maloca, and during ceremony the shaman will come to sit in front of guest’s mat and sing a personal icaro (healing song) based on their intention and what the healer feel is needed. The Shipibo do not employ instruments or any other tools besides song, mapacho (sacred tobacco).

Does everybody purge?

Purging is a way your body detoxes from blocked energy, with Ayahuasca the most common is vomiting. In a ceremony with Ayahuasca the purge is the release of emotions, blocks or any pent-up energy that might be keeping us stuck or ill. It is believed the vomiting comes from illness and purging is a detox. It is important to stay present to what is being released you will know what emotion or thought is being dumped into the bucket. Like in other energetic healing modalities the purging with Ayahuasca can bring diarrhea, laughter, tears, yawning, tiredness and high energy.

After dozens of  ceremonies we have witness an equal amount of people praying for a purge through a bucket vs diarrhea and vice-versa. The medicine guides you and you are present to find your bucket as well as to walk to the restroom. After you experience the healing power of ayahuasca you begin to cope with purging as part of recalibrating your body.

What if I am afraid but have the calling?

Fear is excitement without breath.- Kute Blackson

Feel deeper, the calling for many comes with years of research. There are many testimonials that can influence our own process on taking the biggest step in such profound journey. Each person has its own unique experience and different each time in multiple ceremonies. Trust your experience will be unique. If the fear or concern is about your health please consult with your doctor. We also work with medical forms to see if you are a candidate for this medicine. The retreat center’s doctor reviews each medical form and the medications each participant takes if any.

Remember once you make a decision to take ayahuasca things in your life begin to shift, this  can also bring fear, uneasiness, anxiety, our bodies are breaking through patterns and awakening. Mamay offers zoom video calls to check in with you before, during and after retreat.

May I leave before the retreat ends?

It is important to stay the full week since each activity builds upon the other. The benefits of full immersion, rest and integration are vital to get the most out of your experience. As you may know working with Ayahuasca can be a process and it is important to stay in a space that supports your healing and evolution. Each group has an energy of its own, each bring a special energy to the group and it is important to begin and graduate together in this healing work.

What about visions does everyone have visions?

Not everyone experiences visions. In the many shared stories some go deeper when they close their eyes and their dreams guide them. Many go into fully present glancing in and out into visions with their eyes open. Then there are some that are in deep thought breaking through what  is no longer serving their souls evolution. The stories, patterns, beliefs, emotional baggage and deep understanding. Ayahuasca will give you what you most need at the moment vs what you think you need from her.

What airport do I fly into?

Cancun International Airport code is CUN and the airport transportation is included in our retreat program package.
Do I need any vaccinations?

Mexico does not require U.S. citizens to provide documentation of negative covid results. Mexico also does not require travelers to be vaccinated to enter the country. However, at the airport, you may be subject to a health screening upon arrival. If symptoms of Covid-19 are detected, you will be tested and potentially required to undergo a mandatory quarantine.

Mexico has no Covid-19 related restrictions when it comes to transiting through the airport. Make sure to check with your final destination, though, to make sure that transiting through Mexico is permitted when entering said country.

As of June 12, U.S. citizens returning from Mexico to the United States no longer need to provide a negative Covid-19 test in order to return home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lifted the previous mandate that had required travelers to supply a negative Covid test or documentation of recovery in order to re-enter the U.S.

However, if you’re not a U.S. citizen or are on an immigrant visa, you’ll still need to show proof of vaccination to fly to the U.S. from Mexico.

Mexico asks that tourists wear face masks in public settings, social distance and follow its Covid-19 prevention guidelines as much as possible.
